How to Understand the LaPerm29 Oct
Origin
The LaPerm is a natural breed of cat developed from a spontaneous mutation. The owners of the first LaPerm, Linda and Richard Koehl, had a few farm cats on their cherry farm in Oregon. A litter of kittens was born to the brown tabby shorthair Speedy. In the litter, one female kitten was born bald with tabby markings on her skin. The kitten grew like any other kitten and was healthy. The fur when it grew in was a soft and curly. Due to this curly coat, the kitty was named Curly. Curly worked on the farm with the rest of the cats and kittens.
Curly gave birth to a litter of kittens underneath a tree during a rainstorm and that is about the time Linda heard a noise above the sound of the storm and went out in search of Curly. She found her protecting her newborn babies from barking dogs. Linda placed the kittens in her pocket, and carried her and her kittens to the warmth and protection of the barn. The next day, Linda went to visit mother and babies. The five male kittens looked just like their mother did at birth. This was the beginning of the LaPerm breed, as these kittens became fathers.
Height and Weight
The LaPerm is a small breed of cat weighing around 7 to 8 pounds for males and 5 to 6 pounds for females.
Colors and Coat
The coat of the LaPerm is soft with a different texture that may be similar to that of mohair. The coat can be longhaired or shorthaired and is often bouncy curls that kind of feel springy. The colors vary and all colors as well as patterns are accepted.
Temperament and Living Environment
This breed is very affectionate and gently. They love human contact and are “in your face” cats, meaning they love to cuddle up and touch your face. They will put their paws on your face, rub their heads on your face, head, and neck purring the entire time. This is one breed of cat that loves attention. He/she wants to be hugged and kissed and will kiss you back in return.
They are great hunters and enjoy playtime. Living in an apartment will be fine even though they were bred to be farm cats. They adapt well to their environment.
Grooming
The LaPerm does not shed as much as other cats and grooming is not necessarily needed. Of course, due to the attention, the LaPerm will love to be brushed occasionally.
Diet and Care
The LaPerm should eat a well-balanced healthy diet.
Health Issues and Life Expectancy
There are no known health issues with the LaPerm. Life expectancy is around 16 years.
