How to Understand the Devon Rex28 Oct

Origin

The Devon Rex is a new breed of cat discovered in Buckfastleigh, Devonshire, UK in 1960. This cat was discovered in a litter of kittens near an abandoned tin mine. The individual that found the kitten believed the cat was related to the Cornish Rex, but test mating proved otherwise.

This unique cat has curly very soft coat and does resemble the Cornish Rex even though they are not related.

Height and Weight

The Devon Rex is a muscular and strong breed with both male and female weighing around 6 to 10 pounds. They are average sized with upturned noses.

Colors and Coat

The coat of the Devon Rex is the first thing everyone notices which is soft wavy or curly fur. The coat has been described as a short rippling coat, velvety soft, and can be in a variety of colors.

Temperament and Living Environment

The Devon Rex is a very active and alert breed. This breed is playful, loving, and affectionate. This type of cat enjoys being hugged, cuddled, and kissed. They are very loyal to their master and enjoy sleeping in bed with them and following them for room to room. The funniest thing this breed does is they enjoy jumping. They will jump to the highest places in the home and watch all the beings down below. They love hiding as well, so if they can reach a top shelf of a closet they will certainly be there.

This breed is talkative and expects to be included in conversations even though they are not demanding; they just wish to be a part of the family.

Grooming

The Devon Rex does not need grooming just petting is often enough to keep their fur healthy. When required cleaning with a damp cloth or a bath is fine. This breed like any other breed of cat will need their ears cleaned and their claws trimmed from time to time. It is a good idea to provide them with chews designed to keep their teeth clean.

Diet and Care

The Devon Rex needs a well-balanced good quality diet. This is an active breed, which needs to eat around 80kcal of food per kg of bodyweight, per day. You will have to watch that your cat does not become overweight. If he/she is not active, you will need to decrease the amount of food you provide. The Devon Rex loves to eat and this can become a major problem if food is made available all the time.

Health issues and Life expectancy

The Devon Rex is a healthy breed but some have been noted to have kidney disease. Life expectancy is 9 to 15 years.
