How To Understand The Basset Hound06 Apr

Everyone recognizes the Bassett Hound at first sight with his or her short legs, long ears, and heavy body.

The Basset Hound originated as far as any can tell from genetic dwarf dogs in France. They became popular during a Paris Dog Show and from that time forward have been known for their great hunting skills as well as for companions.

Height and Weight

The male Basset Hound weighs in at 50 to 65 pounds and is between 12 to 15 inches tall. The female Basset Hound is a bit smaller weighing 45 to 60 pounds and is 11 to 14 inches tall.

Colors and Coat

They have a smooth short coat that is great for all kinds of weather. The color of the Basset Hound is the standard colors seen with all hounds, which includes black & tan, blue/gray, red & white, tri-color, and lemon & white.

Temperament and Living Environment

The Basset Hound is one of the sweetest and most gentle dog breeds. They are truly devoted to their family and well mannered. They may seem to be a bit quiet and reserved but never timid or shy. They never meet a stranger. They are wonderful around children of all ages.

Apartment living is fine for the Basset Hound, but he still enjoys a romp in the park or backyard.

Training

Even though this breed wants to pleas their masters, they are a bit stubborn. The trainer should be firm without aggression. Consistent firm training works the best. Using treats as a reward for tricks is one of the best ways to train your Basset Hound. They are obedient dogs, but remember they are hunters and once they catch a whiff of prey nearby, you may have to be stern to keep them from going off on a hunt.

Grooming

Grooming the Basset Hound is easy. You should only bathe or brush when necessary. Inside the ears should be wiped at least once per week and their toenails will need to be trimmed. They do shed constantly.

Diet and Exercise

A Basset Hound’s diet should be a high quality dog food for the proper age such as puppy, adult, or senior. You will have to learn how much your dog eats according to his activities. He should be given two or three meals per day as an adult. It is best to feed him/her at the same time every day.

The Basset Hound needs plenty of exercise. Do not encourage jumping, but running and playing is wonderful to keep him healthy.

Health issues and Life expectancy

The Basset Hound is prone to becoming overweight if not watched. Problems due to his short legs are the number one health problems, which can include lameness. They are also prone to bloating. The life expectancy is 10 to 12 years.
