Although it is commonly seen almost anywhere, this is not just a domestic cats breed, but cats with pedigree and rich background, which ancestors crossed the ocean with the first British settlers.

Colors and Coat
Although colors and coat of the American Shorthair are similar to those of their ancestry, human-controlled breeding has contributed to shape how they look like today, with a muscular, solid built and a short-haired coat in as many colors and patterns as you can imagine, including hybridization to get Siamese pointed or Abyssinian-like cats.
Temperament and Living Environment
These cats are affectionate and devoted to their owners, but opposite to other breeds, they do not need continuous human attention. They socialize well with human and other pets and can easily adapt to their living environment indoors or outdoors.
Grooming
American Shorthairs do no need special grooming, just a weekly brushing.
Diet and Care
American Shorthair cars do not need special diet or care, but watch over their weight because they are prone to obesity. They are natural hunters, instinct that helps them to exercise.
Health issues and Life expectancy
American Shorthairs live for about 18 years but many of them span their live beyond 20-25 years because they are very healthy so other than hip dysplasia, there is too little to care about their health.
