Kim Miller

When Kim Miller went with her husband and 5 year old son, Trace, for a skiing holiday in Colorado in January 2004, little did she know that it would become a life changing experience. Her son went off with a ski instructor and fell, hitting his head against a metal control panel box.

Unconscious and barely breathing he was airlifted to the Denver Children’s Hospital. At the hospital, the parents learnt that his skull was shattered, eyes, brain, liver and lungs were damaged. Post surgery, he was in coma for 10 days. He underwent 26 days of rehab training at the hospital and later Houston he underwent intense physical, speech and occupational therapy for months.

He has suffered from a personality change; however, his IQ has not changed and he is a bright child. Kim wishes she had been told that he should have been wearing a helmet when he was skiing.

Kay-Cee Lloyd will never forget the day when her 12 year old daughter, Kristina, who had slept over at a friend’s house in the condo where they lived, fell from a tree while playing. She suffered head injuries and for six days was in a coma in the University Of Alberta Hospital.

Fortunately, she did not need surgery. Post her injuries, and extensive rehab, she suffers from balance problems, memory loss, lack of confidence, mood swings, anger management issues and other personality changes. Kristina lives with her father.
