How to get more traffic to your site for free

Traffic is key for most webmasters or web businesses to generate income. There are various way of getting traffic directed to your website, some methods have an expense while there are also free ways of doing the same. Advertising is possibly the most reliant for of traffic because you can buy your way to higher positions on search engines, but there are also very effective ways to do this without spending a penny.
Here are some free methods:
Free Directories
List your site to free directories and free search engines. To do this individually on every directory and search engine will take a lot of time but there are some sites that wills submit on your behalf for no cost. Since its an automated system it does not take much effort on their part. However, you will be advised to submit to all the popular free directories such as the Open Directory Project (ODP)
Join popular forums with a theme similar to your own site and promote your site there. People will come and have a look at your site and if they like it they will return.
Offer a free newsletter at least once a month. Make sure it contains a lot of quality material so people will not only look at the newsletter but also come to the site frequently. Allow people who join your newsletter to subscribe or unsubscribe from it. They should be given an option.
On some part of your site you may have an option for visitors to send emails to their friends to let them know about your site. You would be surprised as to how many people do this. If your site contains relevant and interesting information then people will send their friends an invitation.
Quality content
Finally, but most importantly, make sure your site contains and is updated with a lot of highly relevant and quality information. The word of mouth about an interesting site always spreads like wild fire. On top of that, search engines love nothing more than quality information that is always updated on a regular basis.
