Karen and Chris

Karen and Chris had gone for a holiday to Prague when they were conned by a Prague taxi driver. ‘On our second night there we negotiated a price of 300 with the taxi driver; he drove us back to our apartment. My partner gave the taxi driver 500 CZK, and he saw very clearly the taxi driver produce a wad of notes put the 500 in with the wad of notes and produce a 50 and stated to my partner, that is what you gave me. My partner said ‘no way we gave you 500 and I just saw what you did’ the driver denied, with that my partner said call the police then because I am not moving out of this taxi until the police arrive.’

The driver walked back and got Chris out the cab and started hitting him. When Karen went to help him, he hit her too. She fell down and had blood flowing from her split lip. She got into a nearby pub and asked for help. When people came out, the taxi driver got back into his vehicle and sped away. Even though Prague is a beautiful city, they will never visit it again.

Simon

On a very memorable holiday to Istanbul, Simon from Derbyshire was scammed by a taxi driver. When going from Taxim Square back to their hotel, he and his wife got into a taxi whose driver did not negotiate a price initially.

‘We prepared ourselves for around 25 – 30tl and were pleased when even after we got caught in a traffic jam, it only came to 21tl. I handed the young looking taxi driver 25tl and told him to keep the change. He messed with the money a short while and produced the 20tl I had given him back to me stating the corner was ripped off of it meaning it was counterfeit. He kept hold of the five, I apologized, even though I couldn’t remember the corner missing off of the note and got him a fifty out of my wallet. All I can say then is that I then started a conversation with my wife about the 20tl whilst I waited for my change.

‘On looking down where the driver had put the 50 I had handed him, there was a 5tl note and he said he wanted more money and that I had only given him a 5tl note. Knowing that I only had 50′s in my wallet after just withdrawing money from the ATM, I knew what I had given him, even then though I started to question myself. My wife realizing way before me what was happening started to shout for Police assistance and the taxi driver quickly backed down and produced my 30tl change. I felt really foolish and couldn’t believe how quickly he had swapped the notes.’
