Madut Majok was born in 1978 in Sudan. As many other Africans, Madut had a tormented childhood, plagued by war and violence. In 1983, the second Sudanese civil war broke out and villages were destroyed. During the created chaos, Madut become separated from his family and arrived at a United Nations refugee camp. He was moved from one refugee camp to another for months, but he never lost hope for a better future.
Madut focused on his studies and in 2001, he applied to the Student Refugee Program initiated by World University Service of Canada in 2001. After five years, Madut obtained Canadian citizenship and his Bachelor of Arts in International Development Studies and Political Science. Madut Majok is well aware of he opportunities offered by his adopted country and he managed to fit in the Canadian social environment. He is still amazed by the level of politeness here, whenever he compares Canada with Sudan. Canada has taken Madut under its protective wing and he is grateful for the opportunity.
