Some women are born entrepreneurs, and honestly, we don’t have to look in the present to find some good examples. In fact, the history can provide us with some great examples of women entrepreneurs. Lydia Hamilton Smith was born in 1813, from an Irish father and a black mother. Soon after she gave birth to her two sons, she became a widow. Lydia played an important role in the life and activity of Senator Thaddeus Stevens, when she became his housekeeper in 1847. For the next 25 years, Lydia Hamilton Smith managed his home and business in Lancaster. When he traveled to Washington, she was in charge of his household and she served as a hostess on special occasions. Lydia took advantage of this opportunity and learned many things. Later on, she used those new skills for starting a small venture. She purchased a number of properties in Lancaster, Philadelphia and Washington and she even run her own boarding house. All those achievements were outstanding for a woman of color.
