How to Breed Your Own Fish (Real Examples)03 Jan

Weng Jen-Chu

Maling, Taiwan is at a first glance, a small station along the East-West Cross Highland Highway. Surrounded by green forests and traced by clear spring water, Maling is more than a simple Taiwanese village. There are 14 synthetic fishponds terraced like paddy fields where rainbow trout is successful grown for about two years.

Weng Jen-chu, a graduate scientist of the National College of Marine and Oceanic Technology, with two other scientists supervises the trout breeding process. Each Thursday, the scientists select the best spawners and strip the eggs. The next stage is to strip semen or melt from adult male spawners and mix it with the eggs. The mixture is poured into incubators and after 23 days, the ‘eyed’ eggs are produced.

The trout is a popular dish and the Maling trout far produces some of the best specimens. The Tachia River, crossing high mountains and low plains, is the best environment for growing the rainbow trout. This is a true proof that the rise and the fall of many species depends on human beings.
