How to Help Kids With the Down Syndrome Pass Standardized Tests23 Dec
Children with the Down syndrome present some impairment of cognitive ability and physical development, along with a unique set of facial characteristics. The average IQ of children with Down syndrome is about 50, compared to the IQ of a normal child that is approximately 100. As a result, high stakes tests represent a true challenge for kids with the Down syndrome. Dylan is eight years old and his mother was determined to evaluate his progress from year to year, by allowing him to take several standardized tests.
The first time Dylan was too nervous to complete the tests, but it was a good beginning. He was reinforced each time he managed to give an answer, and gradually, he was able to answer a page, then a section, etc. Dylan had problems with language-base tests, but after a period of preparation, he scored average, except two areas: the reading composite and reading vocabulary, where he managed to score above average! That was surely a pleasant surprise for his parents.
