How to let organizations discover your skills to land your dream job

Traditionally, a person applied for a job by sifting through job classified in a newspaper and sent out as many CV's as they possibly can to all the organizations whose job description met their criteria. However, today, the way people go about applying for jobs has become a lot more complex. They are marketing their CV in new wasy to get noticed and perhaps land their dream job.

There are innumerable ways people find their job – ranging from the traditional method to having their profile discovered by organizations on one of the many social networking websites, and plenty other ways in between.

In fact, the “new” concepts of finding jobs has become so common that many people make it a priority hoping some organization might come across it and give them a call. This is all part of networking. Networking, in the traditional sense, involved making friends in unusual circumstances who might one day help you get your ideal job because of the connections they have. However, the networking methods have definitely changed s great deal. Today, networking has shifted more to the Internet.

Emphasise on quality

  • Its no good just creating profile in all the networking sites you come across. It is very important that you are selective. There are some sites that employers are more likely to use to search for hidden talent. Also, it makes much more sense to use networking sites that revolve around the areas of interest that you have in terms of the job or career that you currently do. There are networking sites like MySpace, which, though, an extremely large site, may not be the right place to start advertising yourself. For one, the site is focussed more on fun aspects of social networking.
  • Concentrate on smaller, niche networking sites where people of similar ilk as far as the kind of the job they do have profiles. These sites are ore likely to bring yourself to attention of the people that you want to take notice.

Creating a video Curriculum Vitae

Since all these networking sites also allow members to create and attach videos to their profiles, it might make sense to create a “video CV”. More and more people are creating such CVs in order to give life to a CV that a worded one may not. A video CV provides the employer with a glimpse of the person you are more than a traditional CV would.

Make sure the video CV is done professionally and not seem too cheesy. It is important that you provide a professional image just like you would with a traditional CV. A few months ago, a prospective applicant created a video that was distributed on YouTube, a hugely popular video-sharing site, causing huge amount of angst for the creator because it displayed some extra-curricular activities that he may not have wished for people to see.
