How to become a stockbroker

If you would like to become a stockbroker, there are certain things that you must do:

•  While there is no educational requirements, it will help your stockbroker career to have a background in economics, finances, computers or business management.

•  You will need to be part of a brokerage firm for at least 4 months before you can take the General Securities Registered Representative Examination, which is an exam that you must pass before you can apply for your stockbroker license.

•  While working for a brokerage firm you will be getting "on the job stockbroker training." You will learn the ins and outs of being a stockbroker while your employer evaluates your skills and capabilities. This is how both of you will know whether or not you are well suited for this industry.

•  After your 4 months are up you can take and pass the exam. Once you pass it, you can apply for your license.

•  Once you have received your license you may also be required to take the Uniform Securities Agents State Law Examination, which will ensure that you are familiar with all of the different aspects of the stock market.

•  Even after this training and passing these tests, you will still need to take more classes and receive more training over the next 2 years.

•  Now that you are a full-fledged stockbroker, you can work at stockbroker jobs. These are available at firms that pay by commission.

•  A stockbroker salary is between $250 and $500 per week during your training period. Once you become a full-fledged stockbroker your starting salary will be around $17,000. After 5 years, you can expect to make between $30,000 and $49,000 per year. The upper percentile of stockbrokers actually earn $60,000 or more per year.
