How to become a chiropractor
A chiropractor is someone who applies the technique of chiropractic health on patients. Chiropractic health is a form of alternative health because it relies on non-medicinal treatment. Chiropractic health focuses on the nervous system of the spine to treat and prevent health problems associated with nerves attached to the vertebrae.
The role of a chiropractor is to mainly work on the bones of the spine to readjust it back in place and generally treat it to ease the stress so
Chiropractic health is based on the assumption that many health problems are caused by the nervous system due to impairments of the nerves attached to a human skeletal system.
Obtaining a degree
You should realise the field of chiropractic health requires practitioners that are fully qualified and have gone through the rigours of attaining a science degree in the field of chiropractic science.
Although the most important aspect of chiropractic health is learning the practical elements of working on a human spine, however, it does require a potential chiropractor to go through a chiropractor school and do a course and learn all the theoretical aspects of chiropractic health as well as general medicinal science associated with any course done in any medical related field.
A chiropractor requires obtaining a degree in chiropractic science. It might come as a surprise, but there are in fact very few chiropractic schools offering courses accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education in the US. So, if you are planning to become a chiropractor, it may involve going to a school that is out of state.
There may also be a few universities providing chiropractic courses but these are few and far between.
Funding for chiropractic school
While doing a degree in chiropractic health, a student can expect to pay around $20,000 a year in fees. However, substantial fees are common across most graduate courses and not just for chiropractic degree. Of course, in most cases, the fees will be paid through student loans. But, medical degrees do tend to be more costly in terms of fees than courses in other subjects. However, a fully qualified chiropractor can expect to quickly recoup this and more in the first year because practitioners in this field are well paid, as can be seen below.
Some non-educational requirements
A chiropractor will work all their lives with patients and will involve a lot of body contact, it is therefore a given that they need to be confident about human contact and of course be extremely confident as dealing with patients is part of the job.
Role of a chiropractor
A chiropractor's role is to treat subluxation of the nerves attached to the spine. As you can imagine, when bones in the spine are out of place, it can cause great stress on the nerves attached to the spine. This can lead to a multitude of health problems including gradual nerve degeneration leading to impairments such as the ability to control movement of parts of the body.
Where do chiropractic experts work?
Chiropractic professionals work mostly in the private sector such as offices run by fully qualified chiropractors, some may also work in offices of physicians There are also those who work directly within the health care program e.g. in hospitals. Many chiropractors will liase with hospitals and treat patients sent by them after diagnosing problems that require working on the spine.
Job outlook
Chiropractic jobs are quite widely available and demand for chiropractors will increase because of the greater emphasis on alternative health as a viable treatment option for medical conditions. Also, there are an increasing number of people living for longer and therefore putting more stress on health care in general.
There are both private practices operated by practitioners of chiropractic health and also those affiliated with public health care - operating either as a department in hospitals or in separate offices.
Salary
A chiropractor's salary will be dependent on a few factors such as whether they are working in the public or private sector. The median salary for a chiropractor is around $80,000. Of course, this an average figure so the starting salary is likely to be significantly less while there will be many earning a lot more than the median figure.
The salary paid out to those working in the private sector can vary from one practice to another, but is fairly consistent. Of course, new entrants (newly qualified) will be on a starting salary that will be substantially lower than those with much more experience.
