How to soundproof a room

"Silence is golden". The saying does not just address a speaker, it also implicates the listener. Each one of us have invariably felt the need of respite from the outside sounds at one time or another – be it of traffic on the adjacent road or repair going on in neighborhood, or a loud music being played by someone in ones own house. Silence is golden indeed, and imperative for concentration while working or sleeping or enjoying your time by yourself. And hence the importance and need of sound proofing a room.

Your financial budget is the decisive factor while opting for a particular manner and method for sound proofing your room, out of the various choices at disposal.

Detecting the cause of the noise

To comprehend the root of the job at hand, i.e. soundproof a room, you need to keep in mind the nature of sound. Composed of waves that travel through mediums like air, water and solids, sound is not able to penetrate certain mediums/ materials that either absorb the sound waves or result into echoing effect. While air is the most fluent medium for sound waves to travel, blocking air does not result into effective soundproof insulation.

Echoes result as vibrations of sound waves are reflected by one object ( for example wall ) to another in an enclosure, resulting into louder and longer duration of sound traveling. So , it is required that the sound does not travel back and forth after flow of outside air is controlled in a room.

To achieve this, you need to use material within the room or in the construction material of the room that can diminish the noise by absorbing it. While using soundproofing based construction material is both expensive and a pre-planning concept, the same may not be functional for many, especially tenants.

Simple measures

When money is short and walls cannot be constructed with the building material specific to sound proofing, the effective measures can be laying down carpets and hanging long curtains . Though these measures will not completely sound proof your room, the noise extent shall be drastically controlled and that too in a rather economical and effortless manner.

Further, rough-surfaces absorb sound while smooth surfaces tend to return the sound waves, resulting into echoing. So, furnishing your room with rough-surfaced acoustical engineering design over the ceiling is a smart idea to soundproof your room.

Structural soundproofing

Walls may be carpeted or blanketed or paneled with cardboard egg cartons et al to render your room soundproof. The underlying advice is to block sound waves by bearing your walls with heavy material.

Doors and windows of your room also need to be tackled for being source of noise. The cracks around your windows and doorways allow fluent flow of sound waves across the room, which needs to be checked if you want a soundproof room. To soundproof the door, you can apply weather-strips to the gaps or replace the door with a more unyielding one. Likewise to soundproof windows, you can go for vinyl-framed or double-paned windows or do away with hanging curtains over them for a more economical and simpler solution.

Many new modern homes fortunately have very strong soundproofing measures. Many of these homes are built in consultation with an acoustic engineer in order to reduce the amount of noise getting leaked from one room to another and the noise coming from the outside.
