How to deal the problem of a blocked sink
First, some tips on avoid getting it blocked in the first place and then dealing with the actual problem of a blocked sink.
Avoid washing off fat such as oily deposits, solid food, down the sink after meals, make sure it is first wiped off with a cloth and then washed.
Pour some soda crystals through the sink every night before going to bed. This will dissolve the fats that have built up during the course of the day.
Use a kettle to boil up water and then pour it down the kitchen sink. Boiling water is very good way to dissolve any build up of fat and grease. This should be done at least once a day, twice would be ideal. This is especially necessary during winter when the freezing temperatures can accentuate the fat/grease build up.
Undoing a blocked kitchen waste pipe
If you detect signs of a block starting to build up, open the waste pipe that's connected to the kitchen sink and then use a spring to try an unclog the block by pushing.
Don't reconnect waste pipe to storm pipe
Some people may be tempted in reconnecting the pipe connected to a kitchen sink to the storm pipe because it is much wider. The theory here is, that it will be difficult have fat or grease build up, as the wider pipe would allow a smoother flow of waste.
This however is illegal to do because rainwater should not be mixed with contents that flow down a kitchen waste pipe.
The reason is when it rains heavily, there is a possibility of a deluge of water bursting out through the kitchen sink and flooding the kitchen.
Replacing the pipe
Another solution is to have the waste pipe from the kitchen replaced with a wider pipe. This however would require the services of a plumber unless you have the necessary know-how, as it often requires digging up to locate the pipe and then cutting off the required length of the pipe to fit a larger and wider pipe to the existing one. |
