How to the right childcare
For parents who need quality child care, finding it can sometimes be difficult and seem a little overwhelming. You want the very best for your child. How do you tell who can give that to you? Following these four steps will make it much easier.
1.) Interview Child Care Providers
You definitely need to talk to the potential providers in depth before you make a decision. Call first and make sure you speak with the facilitators until you are comfortable enough to keep them ‘in the running.' Some questions to ask while you are on the phone:
- Is there room for my child?
- What are your hours of operation?
- How much does care cost? When is payment due?
- What meals do you provide and what is typically served?
- Do you have a certificate of compliance?
Once you have felt comfortable enough with them on the phone, schedule a visit so you can see the facilities and meet the staff. If possible, try to bring your child along with you. Once you are there, here are some things to look for:
- A warm interaction between the caregivers and your child
- The other children – Are they happy? How does your child interact with them?
- A clean and safe environment
- A wide range of toys and learning activities
You may also want to ask some questions while you are there. Some of those include:
- What do I do if my child gets sick while at daycare?
- What are the emergency procedures?
- May I see your certificate of compliance?
- How is discipline handled?
- Do you have parental references?
2.) Check References
It is essential that you know that you are leaving your child in safe, qualified hands while you are not there. A great source of finding out about the childcare facility is to talk to other parents who are sending or have sent their children there. The facility should have a way to get in touch with them. If not, that is a warning sign. Here are some questions to ask the parents:
- How was discipline handled?
- Was your child happy here?
- Has this program helped prepare your child for school?
- If your child is no longer here, why did you leave?
- Would you recommend this facility?
3.) Make the Decision
Once you have met and talked with some people who are familiar with the centre, it is now time to make a decision. You have probably been to at least two places in deciding which is right for you and your child so there are some things to consider. Ask yourself:
- Which childcare will make my child happy?
- Do I agree with the caregiver's values?
- Is the childcare affordable?
