How to choose a type of wooden flooring

Wood flooring has been getting the hype these days because of its functionality and vintage appeal. Aside from the fact that is beautiful and cheaper to use, you will also find hard wood flooring to be as tough and resilient as its name. You would not want anything less than the best for your flooring, which you will be more or less using for a long period of time. Investing in a good hard wood flooring right from the beginning will save you from the trouble of having to make constant repairs and upgrades for your hard wood flooring.

Wood flooring is often synonymously interchanged with the term hard wood flooring. If you are in the state where you have decided to do away with customized flooring with a flooring expert and decided to make your hard wood flooring a do-it-yourself project, you might find that the first biggest challenge to overcome is the choice over which type of hard wood flooring to install. The wooden flooring type is different from the wooden flooring variety.

In the aspect of variety you will find the different kinds of wood available for you. On the other hand, the different wooden flooring types of hard wood flooring denotes the options you have on the installation regardless of what variety of hard wood it was made of. Basically there are three major types of hard wood flooring to choose from, and some of these types have subtypes to them which makes it more daunting to land the perfect wooden flooring to install.

•  Solid wood flooring

Solid wood flooring can come in two forms: pre-finished or unfinished. Unfinished solid wood flooring takes more time since you will have to sand it during installation itself. Pre-finished solid wood flooring is sanded and is basically ready for installation. You have a lot of options with solid wood flooring, either strip, plank or parquet. Strip types have a fixed width but varying thickness. Plank has varying width but fixed thickness. Parquet, on the other hand, comes in unconventional shapes and does not look like your typical hard wood flooring.

•  Laminate wood flooring

Laminate wood flooring is not really wooden in itself. It is actually photographic paper with other elements simulated to look like wood. The clear advantages of having laminate wood flooring is that it will not be affected by natural elements such as sunlight. Also, it is esthetically more attractive than wood flooring. Laminate wood flooring is high maintenance though, in the sense that it cannot be retouched by sanding when it gets scratched.

•  Engineered wood flooring

Engineered wood flooring is pretty much like laminate wood flooring but it actually has wood sandwiched in between its elements. In a way, it is some sort of hybrid between laminate wood flooring and solid wood flooring-- incorporating both its strengths and weaknesses. If you really want something esthetically attractive and at the same time with natural attributes to it, go for engineered wood flooring. However, like many hybrids, you will find that it is difficult to find material that will allow you to maintain it as compared to more common wooden floor types such as solid wood flooring.
