How to adopt a dog

Nothing beats the feeling of being able to give a lonely dog a new life in a warm home, but before you go to the nearest pound or shelter to get yours, here’s a few reminders.

Step 1:
Your choice of dog breed should depend on the size of your home. You can’t adopt a Labrador if you’re just living in a one bedroom size of a room. Location is very important to your future dog’s health, remember that if they are stuck in a place to small for them, they won’t be able to exercise and will soon develop heat problems.

Step 2:
Get a pet befitting to your way of life, and mostly the kind of personality you have. You don’t want you best friend to be hyperactive when you’re old and could hardly catch up with the energy, on the same note, you don’t want a fierce and anti-social one if you’re always bringing friends over to socialize.

Step 3:
Get in touch with a reliable source to look for a rescue, shelter or humane organization. Check ASPCA and Humane Society of the U.S (HSUS) websites for listings of shelters and humane societies near you. The former has limited rooms usually tax funded which encourages fostering programs while Humane societies are private though non-profit are complete with regards to rescue and vet care operations 24/7. The latter may require membership though and are a lot stricter because they are advocacy groups.

Step 4:
Before deciding to adopt a pet, make sure to observe it first in the shelter. Scout the place for alternatives and chat with the care taker about the behavior of your choice. If you don’t find your match on your first visit, have a second and even a third, new ones are usually installed by the week, also you may start to grow on some of the strays you’d be visiting, you never know. As a matter of courtesy and help, bring food for your every visit to the animals.

Step 5:
Before you give in to their puppy dog eyes, know what kind of procedure was done on them just so you are aware of the kind of life you’d be expecting with it. Normally, dogs are castrated and sometimes their claws are removed in shelters.

Step 6:
Shelters usually allot interview of boding times with the animals before they are released to make sure that the compatibility is okay. Take advantage of this procedure to get to know your dog more by taking them out for walks, playing with them, and just plain talking with them. This is the best part of the program both for you and the dog.

Step 7:
Do pay the processing fee and if there are none, then donate some. This will ensure the well being of the rest of the dogs left behind as they await their next owners.

Step 8:
Make sure that the information you give is complete. This will allow the shelter to monitor your new pet to make sure you are caring for them right and that they are not neglected.

Step 9:
When you’re about to take them home, immediately secure a dog tag on them so that they don’t go back to the pound when the stray, it will also help if you can have them checked by the vet right away.
