How to adopt a bird

There’s something genuinely gratifying on being a foster care taker of a homeless animal, it’s the feeling of knowing you have saved a life from an otherwise troublesome and traumatic past. However, despite the nobility of the cause, many people don’t know how to do the adoption right, its not enough that you choose the one you feel inclined to and voila, you live happily ever after, its more about getting the right on the proper way.

Step one: Know how it is to mother a bird; it is important that you are aware of how to take care of the bird you will be adopting. The whole idea of adopting a bird is about giving it a home it will be happy in, not a cage it could look cute in. It not much different from adopting a kid, you have to have the proper education on its rearing.

Step two: Join a club; For amateurs, its vital that they join an organization that deals with bird care. This will allow them to further improve their knowledge on how they should be treating their adopted birds. This one could also be a lot of fun because clubs often make trips and outdoor recreation available for its members. Clubs also offer birds the kind of social interaction they generally crave.

Step three: Consult a vet; Adopted birds are usually frail from recent abuse, it will be good if you could consult a vet to have it checked for possible invisible injuries or health issues that may prevent it from leading a normal life with you. You could also get tips on how to personally care for your bird depending on its status. Food is also an important factor to consult your vet for; there are different kinds of bird food meant for different breeds of birds, feeding yours with the wrong one can end you up running to the vet in no time. It’s also best if you ask for the kind of diet you’d be putting your bird into just to make sure you don’t over feed it.

Step four: Be a mother, a very good one; Adopted birds are more prone to get lonely because they have a darker past than the ones who were cared for to be sold. They need constant attention and motherly love. So make it a point to talk to them every ones in while as if you’re talking to babies. It wont be in vain to because birds happen to be very responsive creatures, if they’re not, its only because they had recent traumas, let them warm up to you and before you know it, you’ll be reaping the rewards of being a good mother by having a very active and appreciative pet under your care.

Step five: handle with care; Birds are frail creatures, they aren’t like dogs you can man handle roughly, if you want to touch your bird, (though we suggest you don’t get a hang of this because birds, being smaller creatures, are no animals of touch), do it gently, being aware of every bit of reaction from the animal just in case it is protesting. Birds are injured easily; they also have fragile bones, best to note these facts when handling them.
