How to get rid of calluses

Have you noticed the hard skin under your foot? Yes. This is called a callus. The dead cells that are accumulated in certain areas of the foot get hardened and form calluses.

This is formed usually at the bottom area of your foot where you have been applying more pressure and friction. The formation of calluses is a natural mechanism of the body to protect it against pressure and friction.

Incidence of Calluses

The big toe, the ball of the foot and the heel are the areas that usually get affected by calluses. Calluses on bottom of the feet are found to be more painful than other calluses.

Sometimes the calluses are so deeply seated that it causes pain in the person when pressure is applied to that area. Under such circumstances they may find it difficult to even walk. These deep-seated calluses are called nucleation and are referred as Intractable Plantar Keratosis.

Causes of Calluses

The causes of calluses in certain areas of your foot are due to many reasons that can also be related to your lifestyle. Some of them are:

  • Wearing high heeled shoes
  • Wearing shoes that that are very tight fit
  • Excess body weight due to obesity
  • Abnormal walking style
  • Having a flat feet
  • Having a high arched feet
  • Losing your feet pad at the bottom

Calluses Treatment

Calluses treatment is done by orthotic. By this method the weight in your body is redistributed evenly so that the pressure at your foot is reduced. Once the pressure at your foot is reduced the calluses start to heal. For an effective orthotic treatment consult your ortho specialist.

The materials that are used in orthotic absorb shock and pressure on the foot. If woman are affected by calluses they should avoid wearing high heel footwear for sometime. This should help to get rid of calluses gradually.

What you should not do

Removing calluses have been performed by cutting down or trimming the calluses using knife and blade. This is a very dangerous habit as you might injure yourself and can even worsen the condition of the calluses. Calluses should not be treated in such ways. If you are a diabetic then you should never even think of such treatment.
