How to have your student loan discharged

Is it ever possible to have a federal student loan canceled? The answer to this more and more common question is yes; a student loan can be discharged under certain conditions. As long as you are not in default on the loan, a discharge is available for any student loan.

Here are some of the most common questions about this matter:

What are the conditions of student loan discharge or forgiveness?

  • Death or an injury that stops you from working
  • Bankruptcy in some cases
  • Closure of school where you enrolled to study aided by the loan
  • Teaching in low income areas
  • Military service – partial cancellation

Death/Injury

Well, the first example is the death of a loan holder. A student in this instance is forgiven. Also a permanent disability may lead to canceling your payoff. But these are two situations no one wants to be faced with.

Teaching

Teaching positions can be an eligible reason to have a student loan discharged. The Teacher Loan Forgiveness program can grant a significant student loan forgiveness. Also, teaching in a low-income school can result in a loan cancelled significantly, if not fully.

Military service

Undertaking military service can also result in a significant student loan forgiveness.

Must complete program of study

There are some situations that make your student loan impossible to have discharged. Your loan cannot be canceled because you dis not complete the program of study at your school. Also, cancellation may not be available because you did not like the school or program of study, or you didn't get a job after that.

Will my student loan get discharged if I file for bankruptcy?

The bankruptcy student loan became a sort of fashion in the 70s when most of the student filed for bankruptcy right after they finished their expensive studies. Nowadays, student loans are not likely to get discharged in case of bankruptcy. Today, the only circumstance that allows the student loan to be discharged is if it would cause the debtor too much financial hardship.

How do I know if my student loan got discharged?

After you review the discharging conditions, if you still think you are qualified for it, you must apply to the holder of the loan. Most of the times, you check with the school that made the loan, the school's servicing agent, or simply contact the lender.
