How to find a summer camp for your child

Summer camp is a great way for your kids to get out and meet new people in an environment that is new and exciting for them. So many good childhood memories reach back to summer camp. So how do you find a great summer camp program for your child?

Some things to consider before you choose a camp for your child are:

  • Does your child really want to go?
  • Is your child ready to go?
  • What is the camp all about?
  • What is the staff member to camper ratio?
  • What training does the camp staff have?
  • How are special needs handled?
  • What do they do if the child is severely homesick?
  • What do they do in emergency situations?
  • How much does the camp cost?

Your child should be excited about going to summer camp. If they are not looking forward to it, they might not be ready to go. If your child seems as though they may not be ready, trying a day camp first can be helpful. They can see how much fun it is to interact with other children and build up their social skills and confidence before leaving for a summer camp.

If your child has gone to camp before but does not seem to want to go again, it is important to find out why. Maybe that is not the best camp for your child to attend and perhaps they would be happy at another one. If your child is complaining during the middle of camp, take the concerns seriously. Try to visit your child and see how the camp is run and what a typical day is like for them while they are there. Do not be too quick to insist they stay and that they will be fine.

When choosing a summer camp for your teen these same things are important to consider but other things need to be taken into consideration as well. One of the most important things when choosing a teen summer camp is to make sure it is age appropriate.

Teen camps focus on things such as gaining independence, growing up, and learning about real life. This will be a great experience for teens as it allows them to be on their own, without parents but there is also the safety of the staff members. It is also great for parents as sometimes teens realize from this experience that they are not ready to be completely on their own.
