How to decide whether to enrol at university as a mature student

Most mature students tend to be those in employment who have decided to try and obtain a degree to improve their job prospects. Some are also latecomers who possibly went straight to work after high school; there are also foreign mature students that have come to get a qualification before heading back home.

Any degree that is done should e done according to what there needs to be done. This can often be a difficult decision. This stems from not knowing as someone who is older than other students, will fit in with the rest.

Some people hesitate to enter university because they don't feel they are of the right age. They see universities for those who come straight from college following on from high school. In fact, mature students now make up a significant proportion of the university student base.

The reasons you should attend as a mature student:

  • Mature students are now very common. There is nothing to be ashamed of. There is a concept of lifelong learning that is emphasized.
  • You should enrol because you want to get a degree to broaden your horizons and make yourself more attractive to potential employers.
  • Sometimes, employers pay their employees to attend university to study for a degree on a part-time basis to improve their knowledge and skills.
  • Most universities actively encourage mature students because they see it as improving the character of the university and also enhance their reputation for managing diversity and providing an opportunity for all.
  • Mature students are often given more time by tutors as they are seen to be more likely to be committed to their studies.
  • Mature students can also obtain financing in the form of student loans and get loans from financial institutions at attractive rates because many are already in work on a part or even full-time basis (getting paid leave to study).

Before deciding whether to enrol you should consider whether the university provides the right environment for a mature student. Some universities are known to be more receptive to mature students than others.

Look at statistics of the number of mature applications. All universities have mature applicants, some more than others. Obviously, universities with a high intake of mature students will probably have policies toward mature students that are more conducive to their learning.

Will the degree provide the necessary credentials you are looking to get by doing the course, or will it be better to seek alternative criteria such as whether to provide the necessary requirements that could be justified

The decision to enter education at this stage should be given careful consideration in order to see if there is a great value to obtaining the degree. There might be better alternative ways to get the education that you require.

You may also consider a degree from an online education provider. If you do decide to get a degree from an online source, it should be considered carefully to ensure the provider is accredited. In some cases, online education providers do not have the right credentials and their degrees and qualifications are often worthless.
