How to decide whether online education is right for you

Online education offers the chance to expand on your qualifications to improve your marketability in the job market, to help get promotion at your current employer or even to change your career path. Whatever the reason, online education can now be viable way to boost you earning power.

There are now many ways to study for an online qualification such as an online degree or even Masters programs as well as courses specializing in very niche areas. With competition for jobs stiffer than ever, employers put more emphasis on the need to have the right qualifications and skills.

How online education differs from traditional campus-based courses?

  • Obviously, the biggest difference is being able to study and learn in your own pace and time. This means you have the chance to be able to seek a qualification while you are on your job. There is no need to work part-time or hassle your employer so you can study around your job.
  • Obviously the mode of study is also different. Much of the online studying is done electronically in terms of receiving and submitting work through email, website, perhaps even instant messaging.

Make sure the schools providing the courses are accredited

Just like the traditional colleges and universities, everyone wants to do their course at either a prestigious institution , or at least one that is fully accredited and recognized by employers. Well, its no different in online education; you should be careful that you pay your fees to one that is fully accredited and, more importantly, one that will improve your chance of lending a job or whatever the purpose for doing the course was when you first enrolled. So, do check the accreditation before you enrol.

Ideally, online education is suited to people who are already in employment and are looking to get a qualification or diversify their career options hence the need to receive an education. It is not really for students who are in their teens and are looking about to enrol in higher education. They would be better suited to enrolling on a traditional campus based course because, at that age, it would better to be in aan environment with other students.

Advantages of online education

  • You do not have to be in class or lecture at set times. You get to study in your own time.
  • Suitable for mature students because many are hesitant in going to university studying with younger students

Disadvantages

Despite the advantages of online education mentioned, there are also certain disadvantages:

  • Because there is no strict timetable, a student can find it difficult to impose on himself/herself a strict study periods. It is pretty easy to get lazy if you do not have the motivation.
  • Another disadvantage is that people with qualifications gained from an online course might find it difficult to be readily accepted unless it is very similar in content to a similar campus-based course from an accredited university.
  • The problem at the moment is that online education is still relatively in its infancy which means that the courses provided are often by specialised online course providers. It would be much better if all the traditional universities were providing online versions of many of the courses they run. There are quite a few well-know universities that are getting involved in online education, though.

In conclusion, whilst there are advantages and disadvantages of online education, it serves a good purpose. It caters to the needs of people who may not have had degree education, people with jobs, etc. At the same time, online education is still relatively new concept and, as such, it does not carry the same weight as receiving a traditional degree from a university.

It appears areas where online education might really exceed expectations are courses that deal with administration. On the other hand, it is much less suited to any course that deals with technical aspects which requires much more contact and face-to-face communication between tutors and students.
