How to become a CPA
CPA's (Certified Public Accountants) are different from other accountants in that they must they have certain state and licensing requirements such as education, examination and experience. CPA's are also required to take Continuing Education courses to keep updated on all aspects of CPA services. They must abide by a strict code of professional ethics and they are recognized and highly respected by the public. CPA's are rewarded for their extra effort by earning a high five-figure and sometimes high-six-figure salary. This depends largely on experience.
The education that is required to become a CPA includes:
- An accounting program registered as licensure-qualifying, or
- An accounting program that is accredited by an accrediting body accepted by the Department, or
- A program determined by the Department to be equal to a registered program, or
- 15 years of public accounting experience acceptable to the State Board for Public Accountancy
Next, you must decide where you want to be licensed and apply to that jurisdiction. This is fairly self-explanatory but if you have already taken the CPA exam, re-apply to the state board of accountancy in the jurisdiction where you took the exam.
Then you must obtain and read the Uniform CPA Candidate Bulletin. This is for people who are interested in taking the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination. This will tell you where to apply, how to register and take the examination, and can provide general information about examination procedures and content. This document is only available online.
You must then apply to take the exam. Here's where you can obtain an application or re-apply:
- Many state boards use CPAES as their agent. To contact them visit www.nasba.org
- Washington state applicants should call Castle Worldwide
- Applicants in other states should contact their state board of accountancy to find out where they should apply
There are then forms to fill out and submit as well as associated fees. The process is different for first time applicants and applicants who are re-applying.
- First time candidates. These individuals must complete and send the application forms along with any other required documents. Rules vary by jurisdiction so be sure to follow your jurisdiction's requirements for fee payment.
- Re-examination candidates. These individuals should follow their jurisdictions requirements.
The last thing that must be done is to schedule a test appointment. Once you have applied are deemed eligible, you will receive a Notice to Schedule (NTS) for each exam section you may take. Each NTS is only for a limited time so you want to take it right away so you do not miss any testing opportunities.
