How to make better notes in lectures

Making notes of lectures as everyone knows is always beneficial as it is not practically possible to memorize every lecture attended. Apart form this good notes help in reviewing topics and better understand them and is vitally important for when the exams come around. To ensure the content of every subject is understood well it's fairly necessary to make good notes in order to facilitate the study process.

A few tips to enhance the note taking methods are:

  • Be well prepared during your lecture with the necessary tools to take down notes such as a diary, pens, highlighters etc.

  • Do highlight important parts of the note.

  • Be attentive and focused while listening.

  • Start every new lecture on a new page with a corresponding date and subject.

  • Leave blank spaces for comments or parts missed.

  • Make notes as brief as possible. Unnecessary usage of sentences should be avoided this in turn saves time and makes notes more understandable and less time consuming while reviewing.

  • Develop a set of abbreviations and symbols which help you to understand things without writing much about it.

  • Take a note of all the concepts and words that were not understood during the lecture so they can be understood later.

  • Try and use figures to depict a process or inter relation of concepts discussed

  • Check with your fellow trainees to figure out any miss in the lecture though this should not be the case if you were attentive.

Review the notes taken to figure out any mistakes or unimportant content.
